tips for making a house a home

Last June, Pete, Otis & I found our dream home in Toronto, and we truly could not love it any more than we do. We often have moments where we think, “how did we even get this lucky?” (I mean, minus the whole cancer diagnosis that happened a few months into moving)

We LOVE our neighbourhood (like, so much), and the house is just the perfect size for us. We’re in a new hood, which we loved and have been having fun exploring. We have always loved creating a perfect, cozy little space in the places we’ve had over the years, and this one was just extra special for us.

Something so great about home ownership is there is always a project to work on! Thankfully our place had been updated quite a bit by the previous owners, and most of the changes we wanted to make were cosmetic and easy to do over time.

What I love most about our house is that we have curated this incredibly special space that is filled with so much love and feels perfect for our family.

Here are some of my top tips for making a house a home:

  • Make room for things that bring you joy - I know Marie Kondo doesn’t want us to have too much clutter or too many things, but let’s not forget that things are often tied to memories of special moments, travels, and times in our life

  • Gallery walls are like a love letter to your life - We LOVE a good gallery wall, and the one we’ve created on our main floor is perfect. We love to get creative and not only have photos but prints, dried flowers, pennants, + more!

  • Books are beautiful + help tell your story - I don’t know about you, but I still love a physical book to read over a kindle. Not only do I love to read good books, but I love putting them on display all over our home. They are a good conversation starter for visitors, and you can change them as the seasons change.

  • Find the perfect plants for your space - There’s nothing better than being able to fill your home with plants. We’ve found plants that work and thrive in little spots around the house. Finding where your light is and what plants will continue to grow is wonderful.

  • Build a collection of holiday decor - Well, it’s no secret that I am the queen of Christmas…but I love all holidays and seasons too. Over time, I have collected little trinkets and knick knacks for different times of year. I love to change up a #shelfie or area in our home as the seasons change

  • Honour your family through trinkets + knick knacks - We love vintage items so much in this house. It’s so special to have something that once belonged to a family member and have it on display. Not only does it look cute, but it tells a story and honours your loved one. I love being able to tell someone about a really special item that belonged to someone I love.

Hope you’re feeling cozy in your space and getting ready to enjoy your home for the winter months
