designing a nursery that you + your baby will love!

Hello + Happy Sunday! Spring seems to be here to stay and I am loving this sunshine and the longer days. I feel like we so needed this, especially since we just went into our third lockdown here in Ontario.

I’ve had this post in my mind for a while but never really got around to it, and since it seems like a lot of people are pregnant (lol) and since all we can really do is #stayhome, this may be something you’re ready for!

I was so so excited to work on our teeny tiny nursery for Otis. I’ve always loved kids books, toys and knick knacks and already had quite a collection before even getting pregnant.

We were working with a really small space, we’re talkin’ a den with no door :) So we definitely had to be creative and somewhat strategic with our layout. I have a lot of thoughts about kids room, and of course everyone needs to remember the number one thing which is do what feels right for you and your family!

However, I will say this - I understand that a neutral nursery is very trendy right now and seems to be all the rage (especially on Instagram!) but I personally think there is so much opportunity to make things colourful, sentimental and creative for your little one!

Here are a few of my favourite tips for creating a space that you + your baby will love!:

consider having no theme:
I know a lot of people feel the urge to create a set theme for the nursery, but I say let it flow and keep it fun and ever-changing. This way you can get all different types of decor, books, prints etc and fill it with things that your babe will love and be excited about!

include things that you + your partner love:
Even though its a baby/kids room, you can still include things that the baby’s parents love! Pete and I wanted to add a few touches like this and framed a Strokes print, hung a cool pennant we got in Palm Springs and a vintage David Beckham photo!

keep it colourful:
I see the appeal in keeping things neutral or with plain colours as I know its really visually appealing. I just personally loveeee colour and think it’s fun to add pops of colour throughout the room! Whether it’s books, little knick knacks or stuffies, there are so many ways to add colour for your kiddos.

incorporate items from your childhood:
This is one of my favourite things! I had saved some really cute vintage stuff from my childhood and Pete’s mom saved some of the best vintage items ever. We displayed a bunch of the adorable sweaters and clothing items that were Pete’s as a baby and they’re just too sweet! We also framed a newspaper cover that my Dad saved when Neil Armstrong landed on the moon!

let it grow as your little one does:
Keep it simple in the sense that you can change things up as your baby grows. We went with plain white walls so we could do lots of fun things with the shelves, photos on the wall etc. When you stick to a really specific theme, especially a baby-ish one, it may create more work for you down the road when it’s time to change things up!

have an area you can change up for holidays:
Otis’ room was so tiny that I wasn’t sure if this was in the cards, but I found way! Hehe. It’s such a fun little way to change things up as the seasons and holidays come. I did anything from Halloween, Christmas, Valentine’s Day and Pride on Otie’s little shelf. I included books, trinkets, photos and toys!

Hope you like these little tips and happy decorating! I for one, LOVE decorating bb rooms!
